Environmental sustainability is a cornerstone for achieving global well-being and development. It is a critical global concern requiring a proactive approach to education to prepare future generations for ecological stewardship. Education is pivotal in cultivating eco-conscious individuals equipped to tackle environmental challenges. India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 offers a visionary framework for embedding sustainability into education, addressing the environmental challenges of the 21st century, advocating interdisciplinary learning, experiential approaches, and value-based pedagogy. This chapter critically examines NEP 2020’s directives on environmental sustainability, elaborating on its curriculum innovations and reforms, pedagogical advancements, and real-world applications. It explores the synergy between sustainability and education through policy analysis, implementation strategies. It also explores the roles of educators, policymakers, and communities in fostering sustainable mindsets. Through global and Indian case studies, the chapter highlights the transformative potential of education in achieving sustainability goals. Finally, it provides strategic recommendations for bridging policy-practice gaps and ensuring inclusive, effective implementation.
