ANALYZING THE SUSTAINABLE GROWTH AND DIVERSE LANDSCAPE OF INDIAN AGRICULTURE

Abstract

India has made a noticeable progress and development to uplift the country’s status to “developed” nation. However, during this rapid growth and development, concerns have arisen regarding nation’s basic security. The approach of sustainable development has gained much attention and with experts calling for its implementation. Despite growth in many sectors, agriculture remains the foundation of Indian economy. The aim of this review is to explore the key role of sustainable development in Indian agriculture, assessing its ecological, economic and social impacts. The main objective is to identify viable solutions that encourage the adoption of sustainable practices. A major challenge for India is ensuring food security for a rising population, which requires increased farming productivity. While the Green Revolution enhanced yields, it also had harmful environmental effects. This chapter provides an overview of the current state of Indian agriculture, followed by a critical analysis of sustainable development, focusing on both challenges and opportunities for achieving true sustainability.
