A GEOGRAPHICAL APPRAISAL OF GANGANI BADLAND IN WEST BENGAL

Abstract

Formed during Pleistocene period with hard lateritic duricrust layer on the top, Gangani badland is famous as ‘Grand Canyon of Bengal’. It is considered as a tangible heritage since such fluvial erosion processes contribute to the sculpturing of the earth surface attracting geotourists. The Garhbeta Badland (Gangani badland) has a clear geomorphic boundary. This makes it ideal to study different geomorphological processes like rill erosion, gully erosion, and sheet erosion that lead to the development of bad land topography. The macro, meso, and micro landform assemblages developed under the process response system need to be identified and measured. In addition, the region also portrays an assemblage of fossil horizons that are unique in West Bengal.
