Abstract

This chapter explores the transformative role of experiential learning in environmental education, highlighting its potential to foster ecological literacy, emotional connections to nature, critical thinking, and sustainable behaviours. Traditional methods of environmental education often fall short in creating personal engagement with environmental challenges. Experiential learning bridges this gap by immersing learners in direct, hands-on experiences that connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. The chapter examines the principles of experiential learning, including active participation, reflection, and application, and their alignment with the goals of environmental education as outlined in the Tbilisi Declaration. Key themes discussed include the ability of experiential learning to enhance understanding of ecological systems, promote interdisciplinary thinking, and encourage civic engagement through community-based projects. Examples such as school gardens, field-based programs, and science initiatives illustrate the practical applications and benefits of this approach. Challenges in implementing experiential learning, including resource constraints and equity issues, are also addressed. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of integrating experiential methodologies into environmental education to cultivate a generation of informed and proactive global citizens, committed to sustainability.
