THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) IN HIGHER EDUCATION: POSIBILITIES AND PROBLEMS

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a new field of research that creates methods, tools, and systems to copy and extend human intelligence. The rapid advancement of AI has significantly transformed higher education, creating both opportunities and challenges for teachers and students. The basic foundations of AI were laid during the 1950s. During the COVID-19 period, AI has experienced significant growth worldwide, as well as in India. AI technologies have introduced new methods of data analysis, personalized learning, administrative automation, and innovative teaching practices, thereby reshaping the traditional classroom environment. While AI can provide quick access to information, enhance efficiency, and support decision-making, it cannot replace the critical role of teachers in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and meaningful interaction. This chapter examines the impact of AI on higher education and teaching, highlighting its applications, benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations. It argues that the integration of AI should complement, rather than replace, human instruction, ensuring that the development of students’ analytical and interpretive skills remains central to the learning process.
