DR. BEZBARUAH TO THE END OF THE LAST CENTURY: A BRIEF STUDY ON THE HISTORY OF ASSAMESE FILMS

Abstract

The release of Dr. Bezbaruah was a pivotal moment for the Assamese film industry, surpassing previous commercial records and becoming a milestone in Assamese cinema. The music by Ramen Baruah and Dwipen Baruah introduced a fresh sound, and the film's songs remain popular today. Encouraged by its success, the number of Assamese films increased significantly in the following decades, with many achieving both commercial success and artistic quality. This period also saw the rise of parallel cinema in Assam despite facing various challenges in the later decades of the 20th century. This chapter will trace the history of Assamese films produced in the three decades following Dr Bezbaruah.
