POTENTIAL PLANT RESOURCES AND THEIR FUTURE PROSPECTS IN NAMSAI, ARUNACHAL PRADESH, NORTHEAST INDIA

Abstract

Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh harbours a rich diversity of bioresources harnessed by ethnic communities. In fact, the tribal communities rely on wild plant species and other natural products for their immense economic and medicinal value. The local people of the region believe in their tradition and in great harmony with nature. However, unplanned exploitation of the valuable bioresources for their livelihood may lead to an imbalance of the forest ecosystem and largely the terrestrial biome. In this context, governments and NGOs may volunteer their vital role in the implementation of the logical and strategic approaches and thereby maintain the sustainability of nature. The present chapter, therefore, made an attempt to characterize the rich plant resources of the Namsai region, their importance in relation to the tribal people, and future strategies to manage and maintain the resources in a sustainable way.
