Abstract

The 21st century is defined by a profound transformation in how knowledge is produced, validated, and applied. As global challenges intensify, ranging from climate change and pandemics to digital surveillance and geopolitical instability, research itself is undergoing a paradigm shift. Traditional disciplinary boundaries are dissolving, giving rise to integrative and transdisciplinary approaches that draw from diverse knowledge systems, including indigenous epistemologies, computational methods, and systems theory. This chapter explores the shifting research horizon across the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, examining how technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and data analytics, are not only expanding the frontiers of inquiry but also challenging fundamental assumptions about objectivity, ethics, and human agency. Simultaneously, the democratization of data and the rise of open science are reshaping the roles of researchers, institutions, and the public. At the same time, urgent ethical considerations such as the impact of AI on scientific integrity, the decolonization of knowledge, and the equity of access to research outputs demand renewed attention.
