Abstract

The discipline of psychiatry has evolved through multiple intellectual and clinical paradigms shaped by changes in scientific knowledge, cultural attitudes, and healthcare systems. Early interpretations of mental disturbances often relied on supernatural explanations, but later developments introduced medical, psychological, and social frameworks for understanding mental illness. During the twentieth century, psychiatry increasingly incorporated empirical research, neuroscience, and psychopharmacology, significantly transforming mental health care. However, concerns about reductionist biomedical models encouraged scholars and clinicians to seek broader perspectives that better capture the complexity of mental health. Contemporary approaches emphasise interactions among biological, psychological, social, and environmental determinants of well-being. Within this context, integrative mental health has emerged as a multidimensional approach that combines conventional psychiatric treatments with lifestyle, psychosocial, and complementary interventions supported by scientific evidence. This chapter reviews the historical development of psychiatric thought and practice, highlighting key turning points that contributed to the emergence of integrative mental health and examining its theoretical foundations and implications for future mental health systems and patient-centered care.
