Abstract

Eating disorders and body image disturbances have become significant public health concerns across the world. These conditions are complex psychological disorders influenced by biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Body image dissatisfaction, often shaped by unrealistic beauty standards promoted through media and social environments, can lead to harmful eating behaviors and emotional distress. Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, each associated with serious physical and mental health consequences. Adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable due to identity formation, peer influence, and increased exposure to social media. Early recognition, psychological support, and multidisciplinary treatment approaches are essential for effective management. Prevention strategies focusing on positive body image, media literacy, and supportive family and community environments can help reduce the prevalence of these disorders. This chapter explores the nature, causes, psychological mechanisms, health impacts, and prevention strategies related to eating disorders and body image issues, highlighting the importance of awareness and early intervention in promoting healthier attitudes toward food and body perception.
