Abstract

Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs), enhanced by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), are emerging as effective solutions to address the global burden of mental illness and the persistent treatment gap. A significant proportion of individuals, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, lack access to adequate mental healthcare. This chapter examines the role of digital tools such as mobile applications, virtual reality, telepsychiatry, and AI-driven chatbots in improving accessibility, early diagnosis, and personalized care. The study also highlights the strong relationship between physical and mental health, emphasizing the role of physical rehabilitation and exercise in enhancing psychological well-being. Evidence supports the effectiveness of internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and other digital approaches, particularly among younger populations. However, challenges including low user engagement, privacy concerns, and limited human interaction remain. Addressing these issues through user-centered design and hybrid care models is essential for optimizing outcomes and ensuring sustainable integration into healthcare systems.
