Abstract

The domain of healthcare education is undergoing a drastic shift due to the fast pace of technology, shifting disease profile, shortage of workforce, and increasing demand for patient-centred and evidence-based care. In line with this transformation, the physiotherapy and allied health disciplines have shifted from classroom- and apprenticeship-based approaches to a competency-based model with technology integration and collaboration. This chapter outlines some trends that will influence the future of physiotherapy and allied health education in the near future, which include artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, simulation-based learning, telehealth education, competency-based curriculum, inter-professional education, and lifelong professional learning. Policy-related trends and issues such as workforce planning, ethical dimensions, equity considerations and other related issues are also covered. Finally, the global activities of WHO and World Physiotherapy are outlined to emphasize the significance of developing standard competencies and preparing a competent workforce. On analyzing the present evidence and future perspectives, concrete recommendations for educators and policymakers can be offered.
