VIRTUAL REALITY AND AUGMENTED REALITY IN HEALTH SCIENCES EDUCATION

The integration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) into health sciences education represents a transformative shift in how future healthcare professionals are trained. These immersive technologies create safe, repeatable, and contextually rich simulated environments that enhance clinical skill development, anatomical understanding, and professional decision-making. This chapter explores the conceptual evolution of VR and AR, their theoretical underpinnings in constructivist and experiential learning frameworks, and their specific applications in physiotherapy and allied health sciences education. Evidence from recent literature suggests that VR and AR tools significantly improve knowledge retention, procedural competence, and learner engagement compared to conventional didactic methods. Applications range from virtual anatomy laboratories and patient simulation to AR-guided procedural training and interprofessional education. However, integration challenges including cost, pedagogical alignment, technical literacy, and ethical considerations around data privacy remain pertinent. The chapter concludes with a forward-looking discussion on the role of artificial intelligence-enhanced immersive environments and adaptive learning systems in shaping the next generation of health sciences curricula.Published
