TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED PHYSIOTHERAPY EDUCATION THROUGH VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are emerging technologies transforming physiotherapy education by enhancing clinical learning, skill acquisition, and rehabilitation training through immersive and interactive experiences. Traditional physiotherapy education often relies heavily on theoretical instruction with limited patient exposure, which may restrict experiential learning and clinical skill development. VR and AR provide simulated environments that allow students to practice therapeutic techniques, visualize anatomy and biomechanics, and improve clinical reasoning in a safe and controlled setting. These technologies support competency development by offering real-time feedback, repeated practice opportunities, and standardized learning experiences. In addition, VR- and AR-based training improve student engagement, confidence, and accessibility to educational resources. Despite challenges such as high implementation costs, technical limitations, and infrastructure requirements, immersive technologies have significant potential to enhance physiotherapy education and rehabilitation training. This chapter explores the applications, advantages, limitations, and future prospects of VR and AR in contemporary physiotherapy education.Published
