Abstract

Client-centered and occupation-based practice form the cornerstone of holistic rehabilitation in occupational therapy, emphasizing the integration of individual values, meaningful engagement, and contextual relevance in therapeutic interventions. This chapter explores the conceptual foundations, theoretical underpinnings, and clinical applications of these approaches within diverse rehabilitation settings. Client-centered practice prioritizes the individual’s autonomy, preferences, and lived experiences, fostering a collaborative partnership between therapist and client. In contrast, occupation-based practice focuses on enabling participation in meaningful activities that define daily life, identity, and well-being. The chapter critically examines how these approaches contribute to holistic rehabilitation by addressing not only physical impairments but also psychosocial, cultural, and environmental dimensions of health. Applications across pediatric, neurological, mental health, and community-based settings are discussed to illustrate the adaptability and effectiveness of these principles. Particular attention is given to culturally responsive practice in the Indian context, where family dynamics, societal expectations, and resource constraints significantly influence therapeutic outcomes. Emerging trends such as tele-rehabilitation, assistive technology, and evidence-based practice are explored as facilitators of client-centered and occupation-based care. Despite their recognized importance, challenges such as time limitations, institutional barriers, and limited professional training continue to hinder implementation. The chapter concludes by outlining strategies to strengthen these approaches through education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and context-sensitive innovation. By integrating client-centeredness with occupation-based intervention, occupational therapists can deliver truly holistic rehabilitation that enhances participation, promotes dignity, and improves quality of life.
