SENSORY INTEGRATION IN PEDIATRIC REHABILITATION

Abstract

It is essential for children to participate in meaningful occupations for their development and growth. Sensory integration is a fundamental neurobiological mechanism which allows them to engage in activities like play, learning and interacting socially. Sensory processing problems are frequently associated with various neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD, ADHD, DCD, where children face difficulty in performing tasks effectively. This chapter is an analysis of theoretical basis of sensory integration, the neuro-scientific understanding of this concept and its clinical applications in pediatric rehabilitation. Assessment methods and interventions based on current evidence and their application in facilitating occupational outcomes through ASI will be described with specific focus on neuroplasticity and executive function as mediators of therapeutic efficacy. Indian research evidence will also be discussed for cultural appropriateness. Participation focused, occupation based and interdisciplinary approach is emphasized in the discussion on the topic.
