ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND ADAPTIVE DEVICES IN REHABILITATION

Abstract

Assistive technology (AT) and adaptive devices (AD) are important in modern rehabilitation. They help people with physical, sensory, or cognitive challenges become more independent, participate in daily life, and enjoy a better quality of life. Assistive technology incorporates tools, equipment, and software that enhance abilities. Adaptive devices are made or modified to help people complete everyday tasks more easily. Examples include mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers, communication tools, hearing aids, prosthetics, orthotics, and systems for controlling the environment. These technologies are used in patient-centered care plans during rehabilitation. They support recovery, help people overcome limits, and promote inclusion at home, work, and in the community. Occupational therapists and other rehabilitation experts evaluate needs, train users, and ensure the right devices are chosen and used. New digital technologies, including smart devices and wearable sensors, have enabled personalized rehabilitation. However, challenges like cost, lack of access, and training still exist. Overall, assistive technology and adaptive devices are essential for rehabilitation, helping people gain independence and improve their outcomes. Support through policies, education, and inclusive design can increase their use and long-term success.
