TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN HEMODIALYSIS AND PERITONEAL DIALYSIS

Technological advancements in haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis have significantly transformed the management of patients with acute and chronic kidney failure. Renal replacement therapy has evolved from basic life-sustaining procedures to highly sophisticated, patient-centered treatment modalities aimed at improving survival, safety, and quality of life. Modern dialysis technologies focus on enhancing toxin removal, improving biocompatibility, reducing treatment-related complications, and increasing patient comfort and convenience. Innovations such as high-flux dialyzers, online hemodiafiltration, wearable dialysis devices, automated peritoneal dialysis systems, remote patient monitoring, artificial intelligence integration, and portable dialysis machines are redefining nephrology care globally. Furthermore, advancements in biomaterials, nanotechnology, telemedicine, and digital healthcare systems are creating opportunities for more efficient and personalized dialysis management. These technological developments are also supporting the shift toward home-based therapies and environmentally sustainable dialysis practices. Despite remarkable progress, challenges related to cost, accessibility, technical complexity, and patient training continue to influence the widespread implementation of advanced dialysis technologies. This chapter discusses the major technological advancements in haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, their clinical impact, advantages, limitations, and future perspectives in renal care.Published
