Abstract

The tear film is an essential component of ocular surface health and visual function. It plays a critical role in lubrication, nourishment, protection, and maintenance of corneal transparency. Disturbances in tear film stability and composition can lead to dry eye disease, a multifactorial ocular disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide. The increasing use of digital devices, environmental pollution, aging, systemic diseases, and contact lens wear have contributed significantly to the growing prevalence of dry eye disorders. Modern optometric practice emphasizes early diagnosis and individualized management to prevent ocular discomfort and visual impairment. This chapter discusses the anatomy and physiology of the tear film, tear film dynamics, classification of dry eye disease, diagnostic techniques, and current therapeutic approaches. Important diagnostic tools such as tear breakup time, Schirmer’s test, ocular surface staining, meibography, osmolarity assessment, and advanced imaging technologies are highlighted. Therapeutic management including artificial tears, anti-inflammatory therapy, lifestyle modifications, and advanced clinical procedures is explored. Furthermore, the role of patient education and continuous research in improving clinical outcomes is discussed. Modern optometric practice combines advanced diagnostic technologies with evidence-based management strategies to restore tear film homeostasis and improve patient quality of life. Emerging developments in diagnostic systems and therapeutic modalities continue to expand the scope of dry eye management in eye care practice.
