Abstract

Four-dimensional (4D) printing represents a transformative evolution of additive manufacturing, integrating smart materials capable of dynamic structural change in response to defined physiological or environmental stimuli. Building upon the established utility of 3D printing in clinical medicine, 4D printing introduces a temporal dimension that enables fabricated constructs to self-assemble, morph, or actuate following implantation or administration. This chapter examines the foundational principles of 4D printing, its current and emerging applications in healthcare which is encompassing tissue engineering, drug delivery, surgical implants, and minimally invasive device deployment and the principal technical and regulatory challenges that must be addressed to facilitate clinical translation. The chapter further considers the trajectory of 4D printing within the broader context of precision and regenerative medicine.
