Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges related to poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, and social exclusion. This chapter examines the origins, principles, and significance of the SDGs and highlights their role in promoting inclusive and sustainable development worldwide. It explores the core principles of universality, integration, inclusiveness, and partnership that underpin the goals and discusses their transformative potential across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Particular attention is given to poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, health and well-being, sustainable economic growth, climate action, and responsible consumption. The chapter also analyzes the importance of sustainable cities, strong institutions, and global partnerships in achieving long-term development outcomes. While notable progress has been made since the adoption of the SDGs, significant challenges remain, including climate change, inequality, financing gaps, and geopolitical instability. The study concludes that achieving the SDGs requires coordinated efforts from governments, businesses, civil society, and citizens to build a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable future for all.
