Abstract

The Indian knowledge tradition found institutional excellence in the ancient universities of Takshashila and Nalanda University, which flourished as premier centers of higher learning in the ancient world. These institutions embodied a holistic and interdisciplinary model of education integrating philosophy, logic, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, grammar, political science, and Buddhist studies. Takshashila functioned as a dynamic hub of specialized instruction, attracting students from diverse regions and emphasizing practical training alongside intellectual inquiry. Nalanda developed into a fully residential university with an organized monastic framework, vast libraries, and a rigorous admission process, becoming a global center for Buddhist scholarship and cross-cultural exchange. Both universities upheld the guru–shishya tradition, encouraged debate (shastrartha), and fostered ethical and spiritual dimensions of knowledge. Their commitment to academic rigor, international engagement, and synthesis of theory and practice highlights India’s enduring contribution to global intellectual history and offers enduring insights for contemporary educational philosophy.
