NEP 2020: BRIDGING INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS WITH INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a transformative vision for the Indian education system by promoting holistic, equitable, and inclusive learning while simultaneously revitalizing India’s rich intellectual heritage through the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). The policy emphasizes the importance of inclusive education and mandates “reasonable accommodation” for learners with disabilities to ensure equitable participation in educational processes. This chapter explores the conceptual and practical linkages between IKS and inclusive education within the framework of NEP 2020. Drawing from traditional Indian philosophical perspectives, pedagogical practices, and values of compassion, inclusivity, and holistic development, the chapter analyzes how IKS can support the creation of accessible and equitable learning environments for students with disabilities. It further discusses the role of indigenous knowledge, universal values, and culturally responsive pedagogy in promoting inclusive educational practices. The chapter highlights policy provisions, implementation challenges, and opportunities for integrating IKS with inclusive education through teacher preparation, curriculum development, and assistive technologies. By examining the synergy between these two components, the study argues that NEP 2020 provides a unique framework to bridge traditional wisdom with modern inclusive practices, thereby fostering a more humane, equitable, and culturally grounded education system.
