ROOTS OF A PHILOSOPHY: THE INFLUENCE OF THE INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM ON MAHATMA GANDHI’S THOUGHT

Abstract

The Indian Knowledge System represents a rich tradition of philosophical, ethical, and practical knowledge developed over centuries. This paper explores how the values and principles of IKS shaped the thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi’s ideas of truth (satya), nonviolence (ahimsa), self-rule (swaraj), and welfare of all (sarvodaya) reflect the ethical foundations of Indian philosophical traditions. The study also highlights the influence of IKS on Gandhi’s concept of Nayi Talim (Basic Education), which emphasised learning through productive work, moral development, and skill-based education. By creatively interpreting traditional wisdom, Gandhi applied the insights of IKS to address modern social, political, and economic challenges. The paper argues that the interaction between IKS and Gandhian philosophy continues to offer valuable guidance for promoting ethical living, social harmony, and sustainable development in contemporary society.
