INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM AND INTELLECTUAL TRADITIONS IN EDUCATION: PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS, PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES, AND CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE

Abstract

This paper examines the significance and application of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) as a holistic tradition which has deep integration with disciplines such as philosophy, science, ethics, and education. It briefly discusses the concept and scope of IKS, its intellectual traditions, and philosophical foundations, including major schools of philosophy and their impact on modern education. The study highlights ancient Indian education systems and centres of learning, along with the role of debate and dialogue in knowledge creation.It further explores the integration of IKS into modern education, its relevance in contemporary society, and its inclusion in educational reforms through the recommendations of a significant policy known as the National Education Policy 2020.The paper concludes by emphasizing the future directions of the Indian Knowledge System by establishing its smooth connection with Indian intellectual traditions.
