TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE INDIA

Abstract

India's ambition to emerge as a developed nation by 2047—encapsulated in the Viksit Bharat vision—demands transformative leadership across all sectors, with education occupying a central role. As the country advances its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda, educational leaders are expected to embed environmental responsibility, social equity, and economic resilience into institutional cultures and practices. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reinforces this imperative through its emphasis on holistic, multidisciplinary, and value-based learning. This chapter examines educational leadership for sustainable development within the Indian context by exploring theoretical underpinnings, requisite leadership competencies, practical implementation strategies, and prevailing challenges. Drawing on transformational, distributed, ethical, and systems leadership frameworks, the chapter argues that sustainability-oriented educational leadership is indispensable for preparing institutions—and, through them, communities—to contribute meaningfully to a prosperous and ecologically responsible India. The chapter concludes by identifying future directions for policy, practice, and research that can accelerate sustainable educational transformation.
