LEADERSHIP FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND INCLUSIVE EDUCATION IN SOUTH ASIA: THE ROLE OF VIRTUE, MORAL ECONOMY, AND VALUES-BASED EDUCATION

Abstract

South Asia, home to nearly one-fourth of the world’s population, faces persistent challenges including educational inequality, gender discrimination, child labor, youth unemployment, corruption, poor mental health, and widening income disparities. This chapter argues that advancing social justice and inclusive education requires more than policy reforms and institutional change. Sustainable progress depends on virtue-based leadership, moral economy, and values-based education. Drawing on literature from educational leadership, moral philosophy, and development studies, the chapter examines how virtues such as humility, empathy, integrity, service, and sacrifice can strengthen governance, schools, and educational systems. It also explores the relationship between moral leadership and inclusive education and highlights the importance of policymakers, teachers, and public servants serving as ethical role models. The chapter contends that without moral character and values-based leadership, social justice initiatives remain fragile and difficult to sustain. It concludes that fostering ethical leadership and values-based education is essential for achieving equitable, inclusive, and sustainable social and educational development across South Asia.
