Abstract

This chapter examines the pivotal role of transformative leadership in fostering teacher well-being and motivation within contemporary educational institutions. As schools worldwide grapple with rising teacher attrition, burnout, and disengagement, the need for leadership approaches that prioritize the emotional and professional sustenance of educators has never been more urgent. Drawing on self-determination theory, Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory, and models of transformational school leadership, this chapter argues that leaders who cultivate autonomy, competence, and relatedness among staff create conditions conducive to sustained motivation and reduced burnout. The chapter explores specific leadership practices, including distributed decision-making, recognition systems, professional growth opportunities, and psychologically safe school cultures, that empower teachers to thrive rather than merely survive. It further discusses barriers such as excessive administrative burden, inadequate resources, and top-down management styles that undermine teacher morale. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for educational leaders seeking to embed well-being and motivation into institutional culture, positioning teacher flourishing as foundational to educational excellence and transformative change.
