Abstract

Self-determined learning or Heutagogy is an educational approach in higher education that emphasizes the active role of learners in recognizing their learning needs, setting goals, finding suitable resources and evaluating their progress. Rather than a passive learner, receiving information, the learners take responsibility of their own learning process promoting autonomy, personal responsibility and motivation, self reflection, self assessment and adaptation or modification of strategies as required. For this approach to be effective, it must be inclusive and equitable, i.e.; it should be accommodating the diverse needs of all learners and make everybody feels valued and supported, including learners from marginalized groups. Equity means making resources, opportunities and support accessible to all irrespective of socio-economic background, cultural and linguistic differences, by overcoming barriers that limit access to essential services, opportunities, resources and support. Inclusion focuses on an all encompassing learning environment where every learner is accommodated and their identities reflected in the learning process. To achieve equity and inclusion in self determined learning, a flexible curricula, adaptive teaching methods and supportive systems that promote personalized learning must be implemented. Learners also must have the necessary scaffolding to overcome challenges. It is crucial to cultivate a culture where diversity and differences are celebrated. Self-determined learning can be make a transformative experience for all learners in the continuously evolving educational landscape, promoting continuous professional development and help India move a step forward to achieve inclusion and equity in lines with UN conventions.
