FROM EMPOWERMENT TO LEADERSHIP: WOMEN IN INDIA’S DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY

Abstract

The vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 envisages India as a developed, inclusive, and equitable nation by the centenary of its independence. Realising this vision requires the active participation of women in every sphere of development. Women empowerment and gender equity are therefore not only matters of social justice but also key drivers of sustainable economic growth, democratic governance, and social transformation. Although India has made significant progress in women's education, health, political participation, and entrepreneurship, persistent challenges such as patriarchal norms, gender-based violence, unequal economic opportunities, and intersectional inequalities continue to hinder inclusive development. Drawing upon Naila Kabeer's Empowerment Framework, Amartya Sen's Capability Approach, Women's Studies, and major feminist perspectives, this chapter examines the status of women in contemporary India and analyses how women-led development can accelerate the journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. It argues that strengthening women's agency, capabilities, and leadership is fundamental to building a resilient, equitable, and prosperous India.
