Disability inclusion and accessible communities have become central priorities in achieving equitable and sustainable development worldwide. The paradigm has shifted from viewing disability through a medical lens to recognizing it as a human rights and social justice issue, emphasizing the removal of environmental, institutional, and attitudinal barriers that hinder full participation. This systematic literature review synthesizes existing research on disability inclusion across multiple domains, including Universal Design, accessible public spaces, smart cities, community-based rehabilitation, higher education, employment, transportation, digital accessibility, healthcare, sports, tourism, disaster risk reduction, disability rights, and attitudinal barriers. The review examines how inclusive policies, technological advancements, and community-based initiatives contribute to improving accessibility, participation, independence, and quality of life for persons with disabilities. The findings indicate that while substantial progress has been made through international frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), significant challenges remain, including inadequate policy implementation, inaccessible infrastructure, digital inequalities, workplace discrimination, and persistent societal stigma. The review highlights the importance of adopting a rights-based, interdisciplinary, and participatory approach to disability inclusion by integrating Universal Design principles, accessible technologies, inclusive governance, and community engagement. It concludes that creating accessible communities requires coordinated efforts among policymakers, educators, healthcare professionals, employers, urban planners, and civil society to ensure equal opportunities, social participation, and improved well-being for persons with disabilities. The review also identifies emerging research directions in artificial intelligence, smart city development, inclusive digital ecosystems, and climate-resilient community planning to advance disability-inclusive societies.Published
