Abstract

Gender equality and women’s empowerment are central to achieving sustainable development, social justice, and inclusive economic progress. Gender equality ensures that women and men have equal rights, opportunities, responsibilities, and access to resources without discrimination. Women’s empowerment refers to the process of enabling women to exercise their rights, make informed decisions, participate equally in society, and achieve economic, social, political, and personal independence. Although considerable progress has been made worldwide through legal reforms, educational expansion, and policy interventions, gender disparities continue to exist in employment, wages, education, healthcare, leadership, and protection from violence. Women’s empowerment is multidimensional and includes access to quality education, healthcare, economic opportunities, political participation, legal rights, and social recognition. Empowered women contribute significantly to family welfare, economic productivity, public health, and national development. Governments, international organizations, civil society, and communities have introduced numerous initiatives to reduce gender inequality and improve women’s status. In India, constitutional provisions and programmes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mission Shakti, and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana demonstrate the country’s commitment to promoting gender equality. This chapter examines the concepts, historical development, significance, dimensions, challenges, and policy initiatives related to gender equality and women’s empowerment. It also highlights the importance of education, healthcare, and rehabilitation professionals, including physiotherapists, in promoting equal opportunities and improving women’s quality of life. Achieving gender equality requires collective action, effective governance, and a sustained commitment to creating an inclusive society where every individual can realize their full potential.
