Abstract

Pain is a multifaceted, intricate feeling that may be both a biological defence mechanism and, in many situations, a crippling medical condition. Understanding the underlying causes of pain, directing clinical decision-making, and maximising physiotherapy therapies all depend on accurate pain classification. While chronic pain lasts longer than normal tissue recovery and frequently involves biological, psychological, and social aspects, acute pain is usually self-limiting and linked to tissue repair. Nociplastic pain is defined by altered nociceptive processing in the absence of obvious tissue damage or nerve injury; neuropathic pain is caused by lesions or disorders affecting the somatosensory nervous system, and nociceptive pain is caused by actual or threatened tissue injury. Every type of pain exhibits distinct clinical characteristics, methods of assessment, and consequences for treatment.
