Abstract

One of the most frequent reasons people seek out physiotherapy services is pain, which also contributes significantly to disability, a lower quality of life, and the use of healthcare services globally. Through a thorough, patient-centered, and evidence-based approach, physiotherapy plays a critical role in the assessment and treatment of pain. Accurate evaluation of pain features, underlying causes, functional restrictions, and psychological factors impacting the pain experience is necessary for effective pain therapy. To create customized treatment plans, physiotherapists use a range of assessment instruments, such as pain scales, physical examinations, functional evaluations, and patient-reported outcome measures. In order to lessen pain, restore function, and enhance general well-being, management treatments include manual therapy, education, electrotherapy, movement retraining, therapeutic exercise, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. The efficacy of physiotherapy interventions has been significantly improved by recent developments in digital health technologies, pain neuroscience education, and tele-rehabilitation. Physiotherapy is still a key component of multimodal pain care, despite obstacles such patient response variability and subjective pain reporting. From a physiotherapy perspective, this chapter examines the breadth, assessment techniques, management approaches, advantages, advancements, difficulties, and potential future paths of pain assessment and management.
