Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, is rapidly transforming higher education by influencing how teachers design instruction, how students access and construct knowledge, and how learning experiences are organized and evaluated. Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for educators or learners, this paper conceptualizes Human–AI Collaboration (HAIC) as a complementary partnership in which human judgement, creativity, empathy, disciplinary expertise, and ethical responsibility work alongside AI capabilities such as personalization, content generation, feedback, analytics, and adaptive support. The paper examines how this collaborative paradigm can reshape teaching, learning, and Learning Experience Design (LxD) in higher education. A qualitative conceptual methodology based on an integrative review of scholarly literature and international policy documents was adopted. The synthesis indicates that Human–AI collaboration can support personalized learning, improve instructional efficiency, facilitate formative feedback, enhance accessibility, and create flexible learning pathways. However, challenges related to academic integrity, misinformation, algorithmic bias, privacy, overdependence, inequitable access, and erosion of human agency remain significant. The paper argues that successful AI integration requires a human-centred LxD framework in which AI augments rather than substitutes human educational relationships. It concludes that universities should strengthen AI literacy, ethical governance, authentic assessment, faculty development, and learner-centred pedagogies to develop responsible, inclusive, and meaningful AI-enhanced learning ecosystems.
