Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing higher education by making it possible to create more personalized, flexible and data-informed learning experiences. At the same time, hybrid and online courses have to respond to differences in students’ prior knowledge, learning pace, engagement, digital skills and access to technology. AI can help in these settings through adaptive learning, intelligent tutoring, learning analytics, automated feedback and generative AI. This chapter looks at how these tools can be used thoughtfully in learning experience design to support personalization, engagement, accessibility, feedback and assessment. It also discusses how the role of educators is changing, with teachers increasingly acting as facilitators, mentors, learning designers and ethical supervisors. However, the benefits of AI come with important concerns, including privacy, bias, transparency, academic integrity, unequal access, misinformation and overdependence on automated systems. For this reason, a human-centered approach is important. AI should support educators and learners rather than replace them; while learning outcomes, human interaction, transparent governance and ongoing evaluation remain central to the learning process. The chapter therefore presents a practical framework in which learner needs and learning outcomes guide the choice of technology, with human oversight and ethical safeguards maintained throughout the learning cycle.
