Abstract

Higher education is changing rapidly as digital technologies become part of the regular fabric of teaching and learning. Education has become more flexible and accessible thru online classes, virtual classrooms, recorded lectures, digital resources and learning management systems. However, at the same time many institutions are blending online learning with classroom teaching to create hybrid learning environments. In this chapter we discuss the meaning and development of hybrid and online education, the role of Learning Experience Design, principles of learner-centered design, technology-supported learning, pedagogical approaches, student engagement, assessment, accessibility and the changing role of educators. It also discusses common challenges such as the digital divide, decreased motivation, technological difficulties, academic integrity and increased faculty workload. The future of higher education is also explored within the framework of emerging technologies, in particular artificial intelligence, learning analytics and immersive technologies.
