Abstract

Higher education stands at a pivotal juncture where the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR)—encompassing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)—is redefining pedagogical paradigms. This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of how AI-driven immersive environments foster transformative learning experiences in university settings. By integrating adaptive AI algorithms with VR, AR, and XR, institutions can transition from passive, lecture-based instructional modes to dynamic, experiential, and personalized educational ecosystems. The chapter explores the conceptual foundations of XR modalities, delineates the role of generative and responsive AI in tailoring virtual environments, and outlines cross-disciplinary applications in medical training, engineering, humanities, and complex scientific simulations. Furthermore, it investigates critical implementation challenges, including technological infrastructure requirements, digital equity, cognitive load, data privacy, and faculty readiness. Grounded in contemporary educational theories such as constructivism and cognitive load theory, this study offers strategic recommendations for academic leaders seeking to ethically and effectively implement AI-enhanced immersive learning frameworks.
