Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education by enabling adaptive, personalized, and data-driven learning experiences. Beyond improving academic performance, AI has significant potential to foster emotional intelligence, empathy, belonging, and student well-being when integrated through human-centered pedagogical approaches. This chapter examines how emotionally intelligent learning experiences can be designed by combining AI technologies with principles of social-emotional learning (SEL), affective computing, and learner-centered education. It discusses the role of intelligent tutoring systems, conversational AI, learning analytics, and generative AI in recognizing learners' emotional needs, supporting self-regulation, promoting inclusive participation, and strengthening interpersonal relationships. The chapter further explores design principles that prioritize empathy, psychological safety, cultural responsiveness, and equitable access while highlighting ethical concerns related to privacy, algorithmic bias, transparency, and excessive dependence on AI. It argues that AI should complement rather than replace the human capacities of educators, serving as a tool to enhance compassionate teaching and meaningful learning experiences. Ultimately, emotionally intelligent AI-supported learning environments can cultivate resilient, engaged, and socially connected learners prepared to thrive in increasingly complex educational and societal contexts.
