Abstract

The chapter examines how digital learning is transforming student engagement; with particular attention to their opportunities and challenges. It is a review chapter based on secondary data drawn from relevant academic literature, journals and articles published between 2020 to 2026. The academic literature has been retrieved from databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate and ScienceDirect. Digital learning provides greater flexibility and accessibility, support, personalised learning, improve communication, collaboration, increase motivation. However, findings also identify significant challenges including limited access to digital devices and reliable internet, technical difficulties, poorly organized digital content, inadequate interaction with teachers and peers and insufficient institutional and instructor support. Furthermore, existing research has placedgreater emphasis on observable behavioural engagement, while emotional and cognitive dimensions have received comparatively less attention. Overall, the chapter concludes that digital learning does not automatically guarantee meaningful student engagement. Its effectiveness depends on appropriate pedagogical design, teacher expertise, technological accessibility, meaningful interaction and institutional support. Therefore, a balanced, inclusive and human centred approach is essential to ensure that technology complements rather than replaces traditional educational practices.
