Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping classrooms, administrative workflows, and the expectations placed on teachers worldwide. Yet the pace of technological change has outstripped the pace of educator preparation, leaving many teachers to navigate generative AI tools with limited guidance, uneven training, and unresolved ethical questions. This chapter examines the challenges educators face when integrating AI into their practice and the professional development (PD) structures needed to address them. Drawing on recent survey and empirical literature, the chapter identifies four interrelated challenge domains pedagogical, technical, ethical, and institutional and traces how national survey data reveal a gradual but uneven increase in AI-related PD access among K–12 teachers between 2024 and 2026. It then presents a staged conceptual framework for professional development, building on established models such as TPACK and its emerging intelligent-TPACK (i-TPACK) extension that moves educators from basic awareness toward sustained, coached, ethically grounded classroom integration. The chapter concludes with practical strategies for school leaders and PD designers, arguing that empowering educators for AI integration requires ongoing, contextualised, and collaborative learning rather than one-off training events.Published
