Abstract

Helicopter parenting, characterized by excessive parental control and over-involvement in a child's academic and personal life, has garnered significant attention in recent years for its effects on educational motivation. While driven by good intentions, helicopter parenting can undermine a child's autonomy, reduce intrinsic motivation, and foster reliance on external validation. This review examines the psychological impact of helicopter parenting through various theoretical frameworks, including Self-Determination Theory, Attachment Theory, Cognitive Evaluation Theory, and more. The analysis highlights how over-involvement leads to diminished resilience, increased anxiety, and academic burnout, ultimately stifling both academic success and personal growth. This review also contrasts this approach with autonomy-supportive parenting, which promotes independence and fosters a love for learning.
