Abstract

The concept of adolescence is often associated with positive attributes such as innocence, happiness and familial support, suggesting a baseline period of security that promotes healthy relational development. However, childhood and adolescence trauma can disrupt this ideal, having profound and lasting effects on psychological and emotional well-being. This paper explores the dual nature of adolescence, highlighting developmental stages of physical, cognitive, emotional and social growth, as well as the adverse effects of trauma resulting from abuse, neglect and household disorder. By examining different types of childhood trauma - including physical, emotional, sexual abuse and neglect - we analyze their complex interrelationships with mental health outcomes in adulthood. Research emphasizes that traumatic experiences can lead to significant mental disorders such as PTSD, anxiety and depression, which impact individuals long into their adult lives. Emphasizing the need for trauma-informed care, this paper advocates for targeted interventions that promote resilience and supportive environments, ultimately aiming to improve recovery and mental health outcomes for trauma survivors. Through a comprehensive review, we aim to enhance understanding of the long-term consequences of childhood trauma and influence best practices for mental health professionals.
