Abstract

This chapter examines the ethical issues related to the implementation of AI in the education sector. With AI being increasingly used for personalising learning, automating grading, and helping with administrative tasks, there is immense potential to revolutionise education. However, this benefit comes with huge ethical concerns that need to be addressed to ensure proper use of AI. This chapter addresses key issues such as privacy in data, algorithmic bias, equity in access, and whether AI could exacerbate inequalities in education. It also focuses on how AI influences the learning experiences of students and the nature of educator-student-AI-power relations. The chapter concludes by providing some solutions and guiding principles for ethical AI adoption in education, mainly centering on protecting the confidentiality of students' data and making the AI systems themselves transparent, as well as developing inclusive AI-driven learning environments. This discussion provides an overall roadmap for educators and policymakers and AI developers trying to navigate the ethical aspects of AI in education.
