Abstract

Integrating modern educational skills with traditional knowledge and cultural practices for tribal youth in the 21st century presents a complex challenge. Purulia, located in the western marginal region of West Bengal, is home to diverse indigenous tribal communities known for their vibrant cultural heritage. However, the tribal youth in this region often remain unaware of the transformative potential of 21st-century education, adhering to traditional ways of life. Bridging this gap and fostering a shift in approach is urgently needed. Modern education equips tribal youth with skills and competencies to thrive in a rapidly changing, interconnected world. Yet, it risks cultural erosion, loss of traditional practices, and homogenization of diverse identities. The modern approach emphasizes technology integration, project-based learning, and community engagement, offering tools to connect tribal youth to global opportunities. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, infrastructure, and an overemphasis on modern methods often overlook the value of traditional knowledge and its relevance in addressing both local and global challenges. The key lies in achieving a balance between modern education and traditional practices. A nuanced understanding of the interplay between culture, identity, and education is essential. Efforts must prioritize preserving cultural heritage while integrating modern skills to empower tribal communities, ensuring sustainable development and cultural continuity.
