EDUCATION FOR TRIBAL COMMUNITY IN INDIA: PRESENT AND PAST SCENARIO

Abstract

“Education means that process of development on which consist the passage of human beings from infancy to maturity, the process whereby gradually adopts himself in various ways to his physical, social and spiritual environment” (Raymont). Education is the empowering instrument to change a society in a perspective way psychologically, economically and over all socially to bring prosperity to a group of social individuals (social unit). Indigenous people of India are the second largest concentration of the world with rich diversity in their cultures, religions, dialects, and genetic lineage. As per 2011 census tribes constitute eight point six (8.6) per cent of the total population. In spite of several campaigns and government endeavors on tribal education in pre- and post-independence the achievement has remained low because the population is mainly composed of aboriginals who have little thirst for knowledge. This article is an attempt to focus on the overall scenario of education of aboriginals in India. Education is one of the keys of transformation for holistic development of tribal communities. With the help of education, the marginalized, under privileged population of India can assist themselves to overcome the barriers and oppression of centuries.
