Abstract

The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP), launched in October 2021, represents a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming India’s infrastructure landscape through a unified and integrated approach to planning and execution. The initiative leverages a GIS-based digital platform to synchronize efforts across 16 ministries, enabling seamless multi-modal connectivity and efficient project execution. By addressing long-standing challenges such as fragmented planning, departmental silos, and high logistics costs—historically accounting for 13–14% of GDP compared to the global average of 8–10%—Gati Shakti seeks to make India globally competitive. With over ₹15.39 lakh crore worth of projects integrated, the initiative has achieved significant milestones, including the construction of 8,891 km of roads, planning for 27,000 km of railway tracks, and the completion of the Leh-Kaithal Green Energy Corridor. These developments are aligned with India’s aspirations of achieving a $5 trillion economy by 2025 and fostering sustainable growth. This chapter critically evaluates the initiative’s framework, implementation, sectoral achievements, and challenges. Despite its successes, issues such as land acquisition delays and coordination gaps persist. Recommendations include enhancing stakeholder collaboration, expediting regulatory approvals, and leveraging advanced technologies to sustain progress. The Gati Shakti Yojana is pivotal to achieving a self-reliant, developed, or “Viksit Bharat” and globally competitive India.
