Abstract

India's defence manufacturing sector plays a critical role in ensuring the nation's strategic autonomy and national security. As one of the largest defence importers, India has long relied on foreign powers for essential military equipment, creating vulnerabilities during geopolitical tensions. This paper examines the importance of the defence manufacturing sector in promoting self-reliance through initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. By analysing empirical data on defence procurement, indigenous production, and international collaborations, this study highlights the sector's role in reducing foreign dependency, boosting economic growth, and strengthening India's global standing.
