Abstract

The "Viksit Bharat Vision" represents a holistic approach to building a self-reliant, inclusive, and prosperous India. This chapter explores the integration of the handloom and agriculture industries as a means of enhancing rural economies. With 58% of India’s population dependent on agriculture and 3.5 million people employed in the handloom sector, both industries play crucial roles in rural livelihoods. This chapter examines the synergies between these sectors, highlighting how households involved in weaving and farming earn 30–40% more than those solely dependent on agriculture. The Viksit Bharat Vision emphasizes sustainable development and self-reliance, and the integration of handloom and agriculture aligns with these goals by promoting income diversification and empowering marginalized communities 77% of the handloom workforce comprises women, while a significant portion comes from the SC, ST, and OBC groups. The author discusses strategies such as developing agri-handloom clusters, promoting organic cotton farming (which accounts for 51% of the world’s production), and improving market access. Policy recommendations focus on strengthening cooperative models, expanding skill development, and encouraging public-private partnerships to ensure equitable and sustainable growth.
