Abstract

Oromotor rehabilitation is a specialized therapeutic approach designed to improve speech production, swallowing, and overall oral motor control in individuals with neurological disorders, developmental delays, and structural impairments. This chapter explores the anatomical, neurological, and functional aspects of the oromotor system, highlighting the crucial role of the corticobulbar tract, cranial nerves, basal ganglia, and cerebellum in speech and swallowing coordination. A comprehensive assessment framework, including oral mechanism examination, speech analysis, swallowing assessment, and neurological evaluation, is outlined to guide individualized rehabilitation planning. Through targeted exercises and multidisciplinary interventions, oromotor rehabilitation aims to enhance neuromuscular coordination, strengthen oral muscles, and optimize communication abilities, ultimately improving the quality of life for affected individuals. This chapter provides an in-depth understanding of the principles, assessment techniques, and therapeutic strategies involved in oromotor rehabilitation, serving as a valuable resource for healthcare professionals involved in speech and swallowing therapy.
